I've noticed here lately that whenever I post to a board, right under my post there is "heading level Unread Messages"
Why? it was never like that before? I looked and I don't have an private messages. So I am a bit confused.
I guess a better heading would be "Unread Posts." The idea is that you haven't read your own post, so to the system it looks unread.
It's a new feature, and pretty neat. If you have unread posts somewhere in a long topic, hitting enter will skip all the posts you've already read.
Bob
Maybe we should change it so it assumes that the post you just wrote was read?
Doesn't matter much to me. I don't really use the feature, but I guess that might be helpful to some.
I do use the feature, and find that I use it more and more. In really long topics like books a to z it's much better than going to the bottom and working your way up.
Bob
How does the feature work?
I mean, what are you supposed to do? How do you use it?
Since the heading is
Unread Posts
, you just press "3" if using JFW. That's all I can offer cause I don't use any other screen reader.
what i dont get if if you stop reading in the middle of a topic does the site notice that because when i have to refresh for any reason, it says i have read all the posts when i haven't.
yeah, the feature's useless if you send a quicknote or something like that.
true. It's a problem with any forum which has this feature, which most do. It is assumed that once a page is loaded, you've seen what's on it. Unviewed posts? is that even a word? I think some boards just call it new messages. It's a feature that can work well, but certainly has its limitations. But I think the way it's implemented is the best we can get with current technology.
I like the feature. I wish, though, that the words "you have read all messages in the topic" and "you have read no messages in this topic" were put into a heading 3 line so you could just hit h with jaws and go to that line or any unread posts.
But, as I say, I find it a handy aid when reading the boards.

I've actually started using this feature the last couple of days. I use the JAWS find command, control insert F, and search for the word unread. Then I enter on the link.
As for what happens if you stop reading in the middle of a post, why would you do that? Just finish reading a post before sending a qn.
